They say the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. That may be so, but it’s definitely different in Mississippi. As a medical marijuana patient from Louisiana, you can purchase medical cannabis products in Mississippi as a visiting patient. In this article, we’ll explore how to get your license and your options for the many Mississippi dispensaries.
Medical Marijuana in Mississippi
Mississippi’s medical cannabis program allows out-of-state patients to apply for temporary registration, enabling them to access medical cannabis within the state. Each registration is valid for 15 days, with a fee of $75, and patients may register for up to two such periods per year. To qualify, your certifying practitioner must attest that your medical condition aligns with those approved under Mississippi’s medical cannabis program.
To qualify, the patient must:
- • Have been diagnosed with one of the debilitating qualifying medical conditions by a licensed practitioner.
- • The patient is not a resident of Mississippi
- • Have an active medical marijuana license (recommendation) in the state of Louisiana.
- • Completed and submitted a visiting patient application for the state of Mississippi (submitting 30 days before visiting is recommended to ensure the license will have been approved).
-
The maximum possession limit for nonresident cardholders shall be fourteen MMCEUs. A maximum of six MMCEUs of medical cannabis shall be dispensed per week to a nonresident cardholder and a maximum of twelve MMCEUs of medical cannabis shall be dispensed to a nonresident cardholder in a consecutive fifteen-day period. An MMCEU (Mississippi Medical Cannabis Equivalency Unit) is a unit of measurement equivalent to 3.5 grams of medical cannabis flower.
What Are the Qualifying Conditions?
In Mississippi, there are many qualifying conditions for medical marijuana including Parkinson’s disease, ALS, cancer, and glaucoma. In addition, seizures and chronic pain are included. If the condition is not shown on this list (current as of this writing) any Mississippi resident may petition the Mississippi Department of Health to have the chronic condition added.
• Cancer
• Parkinson’s disease
• Huntington’s disease
• Muscular dystrophy
• Glaucoma
• Spastic quadriplegia
• Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
• Hepatitis
• Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
• Crohn’s disease
• Ulcerative colitis
• Sickle-cell anemia
• Alzheimer’s disease
• Agitation of dementia
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• Autism
• Pain refractory to appropriate opioid management
• Diabetic/peripheral neuropathy
• Spinal cord disease or severe injury
Also qualifying is a chronic terminal or debilitating disease or medical condition or its treatment that produces one or more of the following:
• cachexia or wasting syndrome
• chronic pain
• severe or intractable nausea
• seizures
• severe and persistent muscle spasms including, but not limited to, those characteristic of multiple sclerosis
Any resident of Mississippi may petition the MDOH to add serious medical conditions or their treatments to the list of debilitating medical conditions listed in Miss. Code Ann. § 41-137-3.
Dispensaries in Mississippi
In addition to having 122 cultivators versus only two for Louisiana, Mississippi has 198 dispensaries as listed in the current Mississippi Department of Health registry. That’s a lot more choices for medical marijuana patients.
We’ll take a look at some of the dispensaries close to the Louisiana/Mississippi border but, if you want to take a look for yourself, you can visit the Mississippi Department of Health for a complete list of all dispensaries, cultivators, and other facilities related to medical marijuana in Mississippi. (NOTE: Please confirm that the location you intend to visit will be open and available for patients to shop before making the journey.)
